TOOTH EXTRACTIONS (Removal)
Tooth extraction is typically the final resort in dental treatment when there is poor prognosis or in some cases for correction of malocclusion. Many patients fear the process of extraction and associate it with extreme pain and discomfort. However, the right technique and instruments make the procedure relatively painless and easy.

There are a few reasons why we might need to remove a tooth:
- Traumatic Injury to the tooth.
- Profound decay or serious gum problems
- Overcrowded teeth
- Orthodontic treatment purpose
There are two types of tooth extraction:
- Simple
- Surgical
Simple Extractions
- These are extractions of teeth that are visible in the mouth and are usually carried out in the dental chair while the patient is awake.
- Simple extraction involves injecting direct local anaesthesia to numb the region around the tooth. Then the tooth is loosened and elevated with proper technique finally removing it.
- Sometimes, the tooth might break during the extraction and this should not be panicked as it can be easily removed by the dentist separately.
- However, if the fractured fragment of the tooth is too difficult to remove, the dental specialist might resort to a surgical extraction method. There are additionally situations where the dental specialist can securely leave fragments in place which might self resorbed overtime.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical extractions are performed when teeth are not easy to remove by normal method and might need incision, cutting and suturing. For instance, Wisdom teeth mostly require surgical intervention as in most cases they are either partially erupted or impacted.
How Is It Done?
Your dental specialist will decide the line of anaesthesia whether local anaesthesia /intravenous sedation. The extraction is performed with proper armamentarium and requires incision, cutting and suturing.
What Happens?
The dentist will discuss the procedure with patient before the surgery. Surgical extractions involve making an incision on the gums to access the tooth. Some bone may also be removed during the procedure. The process then goes ahead in the same way as a simple extraction but suturing may be needed.
Recuperation time is generally longer than a single extraction. You can expect some swelling and will likely need rest for at least 24 hours. The swelling resorbs within a week under proper medication and precautions.
At Smile 4U Family Dental Clinic our experienced specialist Dr. Sajid Shaikh (MDS) is well equipped and experienced in doing surgical extractions without incision or cutting of gums and without drilling of bone. This results in less complications, no swelling and comfortable procedure with less discomfort or less pain after the procedures.
